 4 Wheeled Walking Frame

 4 Wheeled Walking Frame

It’s a sad fact that an increasing number of people have problems with mobility, which is why we have seen an increase in the use of 4 wheeled walking frames.

It’s also a sad fact that problems with mobility can give rise to all sorts of other problems – a lack of independence, social isolation, physical problems from lack of exercise and even depression.

It’s worth remembering that not everyone with mobility problems is older, so it’s also possible that a lack of mobility can lead to problems at work or unemployment.

Mobility assistance comes in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, from the humble walking stick right through to luxurious mobility scooters. In this article, we’re going to be looking at some of the options for those who can still walk but are perhaps not too steady on their feet or those who can’t walk very far without needing a rest.

Four Wheeled Walker

The ‘best-of-all-worlds’ option is the four wheeled walker. This has all the advantages of the tri walker but is made of a square frame with a wheel at each corner. This means much more support is provided because the frame is more rigid.

It also often means that more room is provided between the handlebars, allowing for a larger seat and/or more storage space.

Nearly all four wheeled walkers fold so as to be easily stored or transported in a car or on a bus with the user. Many are made of lightweight metals, making them easy to move around without losing sturdiness.

Here is a video that shows you how to use a 4 wheeled walker.

Walking Frame/Zimmer Frame

This is the most basic option. Most walking frames, also known as Zimmer frames, are simply a three-sided structure (normally made of tubular metal) that the user leans on for stability and support. The frame is lifted and placed ahead, then the user walks to the frame and repeats the process.

Walking frames are not suitable for those with low arm strength as the frame must be lifted frequently. Also, walking frames are less suitable for use outdoors or on uneven surfaces

alking Trolley

The walking trolley is usually a walking frame with one or more trays attached between the handles. This helps to solve the problem of the person who needs to carry food or drinks when using their frame.

However, the walking trolley is not suited to use outside the home. The trays are rarely deep enough to carry anything substantial, and would not therefore be suitable for use when shopping.

Tri Walker

The next option is the tri walker, a more sophisticated version of the walking frame. They normally consist of a metal frame with three large wheels, the front one of which can be used for steering. Handlebars are attached with brakes that can be used to lock the wheels. This is because most models have a seat between the handlebars.

The seat is a very useful feature, and allows the user to attempt longer distances without fear of getting stuck. If the user gets tired, they can take all of the weight off the legs and sit for as long as needed.

Most walkers also include a shopping basket, on the front of the frame or under the seat. This allows a much greater variety of uses than the walking frame or the walking trolley.
